Description:

Join us for a two-part expert webinar featuring Dr. Anette Vistoso Monreal and Dr. Glenn T. Clark exploring the present and future of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and orofacial pain management. Dr. Vistoso will present the work of the BETTER-TMD initiative, highlighting large-scale patient-reported outcomes, digital health platforms, and collaborative research efforts redefining evidence-based TMD care. This work is supported by the NIDCRโ€“NIH.

Complementing this perspective, Dr. Clark will address the persistent challenge of treatment failures and introduce the emerging field of algorithmic precision medicine, including the Bayesian Additive Regression Tree Treatment Benefit Index (BART-TBI), a predictive tool designed to individualize treatment selection and increase success rates. Together, these lectures provide a comprehensive view of how real-world data, interdisciplinary collaboration, and AI-supported decision tools are shaping the next generation of personalized TMD therapy.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

โ€ข Identify key predictive factors for treatment failure in orofacial pain and TMD patients using the “PILIHO” framework (Prior treatment failure, Impaired function, Long duration, Intensity of pain, High psychological distress, Other chronic pain diagnoses)

โ€ข Analyze the seven primary reasons for treatment failure using the “PCINAMI” framework (Persistent local disease, Central sensitization, Immune/inflammatory disease, Neuropathic peripheral pain, Altered pre-pain cognition, Motor hyperactivity, Incorrect treatment)

โ€ข Apply the nine critical data elements required for algorithmic treatment prediction (age, sex, pain duration, pain intensity, functional impairment, chronic pain comorbidities, psychological factors, and prior treatment failures)

โ€ข Understand the principles and clinical applications of the BART-TBI algorithm for predicting treatment benefit probabilities

โ€ข Evaluate case examples demonstrating how algorithmic predictions guide treatment selection in complex orofacial pain presentations
