Title: Update on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ)

This webinar will focus on the dental complication of jaw osteonecrosis associated with specific medications used in medical and oncologic settings. Millions of Americans are currently receiving these medications to treat common bone disorders such as osteoporosis, cancer metastases to bone, and multiple myeloma. However, a serious complication and adverse effect can occur known as medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), which clinically can be characterized by painful and exposed non-vital jaw bone (sequestrum) in the oral cavity. For patients, having MRONJ can interfere with their dental, medical or oncologic care and therefore it is important for the oral health care professional to understand this condition.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understanding the role of MRONJ drugs in bone theraputics.
2. Knowledge of the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic features of MRONJ.
3. Management and prevention of MRONJ.
4. Understanding the dental and medicolegal implications in patients with MRONJ.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Parish P. Sedghizadeh received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from UCLA, and his Doctor of Dental Surgery from USC. After his doctorate, he pursued specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Ohio State University, where he also attained a Master of Science degree in Oral Biology, fellowship in the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and subsequently board certification. He is a Professor of Clinical Dentistry at the University of Southern California (USC), Ostrow School of Dentistry, and Director of the USC Center for Biofilms and Department Co-Chair of Diagnostic Sciences, Anesthesia and Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Sedghizadeh conducts research, publishes, consults, and teaches oral and maxillofacial pathology, radiology, and medicine with an active clinical practice. Dr. Sedghizadeh has over 80 peer-reviewed publications, and his research laboratory, clinical practice, and clinical research projects at USC currently focus on the characterization and treatment of maxillofacial pathology and microbial biofilm infections, particularly jaw osteomyelitis and osteonecrosis where he has developed novel bone-targeted antimicrobial therapeutics.
