The Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry’s Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine Programs will welcome certificate and master’s students to their comprehensive Bootcamp A this summer. This five-day intensive experience serves as the foundational clinical component for students, combining hands-on training with expert instruction. The students will participate in a carefully structured curriculum featuring diagnostic techniques, extraoral examinations, and specialized therapeutic interventions.

  • Dr. Glenn T. Clark – Associate Dean of Distance Learning and Telehealth, OFP Specialist
  • Dr. Anette Vistoso – Director of Distance Learning and Telehealth
  • Dr. Dornan – Clinical Supervisor, OFP Clinic

The program employs a dynamic Group A/Group B rotation system, ensuring personalized attention and maximum hands-on experience:

Advanced Diagnostic Procedures:

  • Sleep Study (PSG) Interpretation with remote practice capabilities
  • Comprehensive Neurologic Examinations including otoscopic assessments
  • Serology Testing applications in oral medicine
  • Advanced Imaging Techniques in oral medicine diagnosis

Therapeutic Interventions:

  • Miscellaneous Injection Techniques with live practice sessions
  • Botox Injections for orofacial pain and oral medicine applications
  • Topical Antibiotic Protocols and MRONJ management strategies

Surgical Skills Development:

  • Punch and Scalpel Biopsy Techniques
  • Advanced Suturing Methods with various needles and blades
  • Oral Epithelial Dysplasia Management protocols

Comprehensive Clinical Integration

Real-World Experience

Participants will rotate through multiple clinical environments:

  • Orofacial Pain Clinic shadowing with live patient interactions
  • Oral Medicine Center rounds and case presentations
  • OralCare Precancer and Pain Clinic exposure

Mock-Up Patient Training

The program features innovative mock-up patient sessions where participants alternate between provider and patient roles, developing both clinical skills and patient empathy.

Rigorous Assessment Protocol

The bootcamp employs multiple evaluation methods to ensure competency:

  • Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) covering saliva testing, fungal culture, neurologic examination, otoscopic examination, intraoral examination, allodynia mapping, and injection techniques
  • Clinical Skills Evaluation Exercises (CSEE) in specialized cubicles
  • Case Presentation Sessions with peer review
  • VIVA VOCE examinations with virtual patient scenarios
