Title: Oral Mucosal Disease Agents
Content:
This lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of the therapeutic agents used in managing oral mucosal diseases, focusing on the evidence-based treatment protocols commonly employed in oral mucosal diseases. We will examine the “25 prescriptions” approach that is widely used in oral medicine practice, covering three major categories of pharmacological interventions: antifungal agents, antibiotics, and antivirals. We will discuss the distinction between polyenes and azoles, their mechanisms of action, and the critical importance of combining antifungal therapy with dental biofilm removal for optimal treatment outcomes, especially in immunocompromised patients. The lecture will then transition to examining specific therapeutic approaches for autoimmune and vesiculobullous diseases of the oral mucosa, with detailed case studies on recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and pemphigus vulgaris management.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to select appropriate antifungal agents (polyenes vs. azoles) for oral candidiasis treatment while implementing biofilm removal strategies to prevent antifungal resistance.
2. Participants will be able to design corticosteroid treatment protocols (topical, systemic, or injectable) for autoimmune oral mucosal diseases based on disease severity and distribution.e of the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic features of MRONJ.
3. Participants will be able to apply evidence-based treatment approaches for recurrent aphthous stomatitis and vesiculobullous diseases using the “25 prescriptions” framework while recognizing potential systemic disease associations.
Upon successfully completing the course, 1 hour of free continuing education credit will be provided.
