Title: Injection Therapy in Orofacial Pain: Part 1

Content: This 1 hour continuing education lecture provides a critical analysis of various injection-based treatments for myofascial pain and trigger point-related disorders. The discussion emphasizes the importance of understanding the underlying mechanisms before selecting a treatment and questions the long-term efficacy of interventions that provide only short-term relief. The lecture covers trigger point injections with lidocaine, dry needling, botulinum toxin, and acupuncture, evaluating the evidence supporting each approach. Attendees will gain insights into the neurophysiological basis of trigger points, the role of muscle ischemia, and the biochemical changes associated with myofascial pain.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the key neurophysiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying trigger points and myofascial pain.
  2. Compare and contrast different injection therapies, including lidocaine, botulinum toxin, and dry needling, based on their mechanisms of action and clinical efficacy.
  3. Critically evaluate the evidence for injection-based therapies and understand their appropriate role in managing orofacial pain.
