On-Ground Courses
Summer
OPR 732 Knowledge Assessment (1 Unit)
This is a 1.0 unit course where residents must attend the USC campus. This course is given during the summer trimester at the end of the program. The essential elements of this course are detailed below:
- Several intensive calibration/training/seminar sessions will be provided by various faculty during the first week of the course. The specific content of these sessions is based on the content that the resident is expected to have mastered by the end of the program.
- Also in the first week of the course will be multiple practical demonstrations of methods and techniques as well as calibration training in all of these methods.
- After these review and practical demonstration sessions are finished, the resident will be given five types of examinations (each exam worth 20% of their grade) including:
- A short essay examination will be provided. The essay questions on this test will be based on the 100+ cases and associated case questions that were covered in the weekly video conference.
- A 100 item multiple-choice/short answer comprehensive based on content for the various courses covered during the year.
- Multiple different OSCE examinations designed to evaluate the resident’s competence in Clinical Pathology and Radiology tasks.
- An oral examination by a faculty panel (at least 2 faculty) will be given individually to each resident and the resident will be expected to respond (provide an oral explanation of how they would diagnose and manage a set of cases). The cases we use on this oral examination will be drawn from the cases which were covered in the weekly video conference sessions.
- A virtual patient competency test will be given to each resident. The resident will be required to interview and diagnose and recommend treatment procedures for each virtual patient.
